Individual & Family Options

Health insurance for yourself and/or your family can actually be more affordable than you think. But not every plan costs the same — that's why it's best to compare benefits and rates to find the plan that's right for your budget.
Individual vs. Family Coverage
For complete family health insurance, you have a few basic coverage options.

  1. Individual plans for every family member. This is the best family health insurance option for families whose members have different health needs. If a member has a chronic illness such as diabetes or asthma, individual plans could be the most cost-effective way to go. Because insurance companies set rates according to health, a pre-existing condition could drive premiums up for everyone. But with individual plans, family members who don't need frequent medical care are on separate plans — and can keep low rates.
  2. Cover everyone with your individual plan. Some insurance companies will allow you to add family members under your individual coverage. If your family needs coverage for routine and emergency care, this is a good option to consider. Covering everyone with one individual family health insurance plan is usually most affordable if everyone has similar health needs.

Medicare supplemental Insurance

Medicare and private insurance companies have teamed up to help reduce the out-of-pocket medical expenses that plague many seniors. This coverage is called Medicare Supplement Insurance.

There are four parts to Medicare.

Part A = Hospital Insurance (Inpatient Hospital Care & Hospice)

Part B = Medical Insurance (Dr. Visits & Preventative Care)

Part C = Medicare Advantage (Private Insurance Company Coverage, approved by Medicare)

Part D = Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare Supplement Insurance helps you pay medical expenses that are not covered by Medicare. There are several different supplement plans and each serves a different purpose. Medicare Supplement Insurance helps you pay more of your medical bills, so that you will have little to no out-of-pocket costs to pay to doctors, hospitals, or pharmacies.

Many private insurance companies are Medicare Supplement Insurance providers. To use these plans, you simply give your doctor, hospital, or pharmacy your Medicare card and your Medicare Supplement Insurance card(s). They will first bill Medicaid to see what will be covered. Anything that is left will be sent to your Medicare Supplement Insurance Providers. These policies together will usually pay all or most of your medical expenses, so that you don’t hav to worry about hefty bills and other out-of-pocket expenses besides your premiums. Some Medicare Supplement Insurance Providers have even made this easier by allowing the doctor or hospital to bill them directly, paying the full amount, and then sending Medicare a bill for their portion of the expenses, which Medicare then pays.

Health Savings Accounts

A Health Savings Account (HSA) is an alternative to comprehensive health insurance; it is a savings vehicle that allows people a different way to pay for their health care. The HSA enables you to contribute funds on a pre-tax or tax-deductible basis, which you may use to pay for eligible medical expenses.

Use your HSA in conjunction with traditional health insurance policies that are qualified as High Deductible Health Plans (HDHP), or plans with a minimum deductible of $1100 for individuals and $2200 for families.

With an HSA, you are in control! You own and you control the money in your HSA. You decide how to spend the money without a health insurance company telling you what to do. You also decide what types of investments to make with the money in the account in order to make it grow.
